LATHAM, N.Y. - A New York Military Forces Honor Guard will be providing military honors when the remains of Nassau, Rensselaer County native Sgt. Derek Farley arrives at the Albany International Airport Aug. 25.
Farley was killed Aug. 17 in Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device he was attempted to disarm exploded.
The Honor Guard is comprised of New York Army National Guard soldiers from area units who provide this service to the families of fallen soldiers as an additional duty.
The Honor Guard provides honors at the funerals of both veterans and soldiers who have died in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2009 the Honor Guard provided military services at more than 10,000 funerals across New York.
Members of the area team provided honors during a transfer of remains ceremony for a World War II soldier, United States Army Air Force 1st Lt. Ray Fletcher. Fletcher died in a May 1944 crash but his remains were returned to Vermont through the Albany International Airport Aug. 18.
