KABUL - An Afghan and coalition security force captured the Taliban military commissioner for six Takhar districts in the province Friday.
The commissioner facilitates foreign fighter suicide bombers and leads attacks against Afghan National Security Forces operating in Takhar. He recently stepped in as the deputy shadow governor for Takhar province, after the former deputy, Muhammad Amin, was killed in a precision air strike Thursday.
Recent reporting led the security force to go to a compound and a nearby campsite north of Dashi-e Qal'eh in Darquad District, to search for the targeted individual. As they approached, the security force came under fire by several armed insurgents as they ran from the targeted areas.
The ground force and coalition aircraft engaged the insurgents, killing six. The security force found multiple weapons, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and narcotics at the scene.
After the fighting ceased, Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully and then secured the area. After questioning all the residents, the security force detained the targeted individual and one of his associates.
The assault force protected the women and children throughout the search.
