KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan and coalition security force operation resulted in the detention of several suspected Taliban in Wardak province Sept. 5.

Although the target of the operation, a known explosives expert and improvised explosive device maker, was not at the site, the force did detain several suspected insurgents - including one of the target's top lieutenants, another IED maker also wanted by Afghan national security forces.

When the combined forced arrived at the objective, they saw individuals running from the compound. Afghan and coalition forces followed the insurgents into a nearby orchard where successive fire fights ensued over an extended period of time.

The combined force made the decision not to call in air support as there were civilians in the area.

As the fire fights subsided, the combined force moved back to the original target compound, made several searches and discovered three suspected insurgents. The suspected insurgents were taken into custody.

The force also found 23 kilograms of home-made explosives, two 107 mm rocket fuses and 1,000 meters of copper IED command wire.

The detainees were handed over to Afghan security forces for processing.
