PATROL BASE BEIRUT, Afghanistan — Marines of Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, paid tribute to the lives and service of two fallen brothers during a joint memorial service at Patrol Base Beirut, Helmand province, Afghanistan, Sept. 5.

Sgt. Jason D. Calo and Lance Cpl. Nathaniel J. Schultz were killed in action Aug. 22 and Aug. 21, respectively, while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Calo, a joint-terminal attack controller with Golf Company, 2/6 was from Lexington, Ky. He was 23.

Schultz, an assault man with Golf Company, 2/6, was from Safety Island, Fla. He was 19.

“We know firsthand the nature of war, as it has touched the nature of our being, of your being,” said Lt. Col. Kyle Ellison, the commanding officer of 2/6. “The way we overcome adversity is through cohesion.”

Capt. Brandon Turner, their company commander, commended their service and that they had carried on the battalion’s legacy like Marines of World War II.

Calo was both a friend and mentor to Marines of Golf Company, said Sgt. Travis Henderson, a fellow controller with the battalion.

Henderson revealed to the Marines present that Calo had extended his contract to come on this deployment, providing that support needed to bring the Marines home safely.

Friends of Schultz mentioned his appearance, the way he conducted himself and worked to improve himself whenever he could.

The two are also remembered by their fellow Marines for knowing their jobs and striving to excel in them.

Navy Lt. David Mowbray, chaplain for 2/6, reminded the Marines and sailors that both of these Marines stayed focus on what was important, and did not lose the intensity to get things done and do them the right way.

Their fellow Marines honor their selflessness, heroism and sacrifice as they continue to conduct combat operations in Marjah, Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Calo’s personal awards include the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terror Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.

Schultz’s personal awards include the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terror Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
