KABUL - Acting on intelligence reports, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted a combined operation resulting in the detainment of several suspected insurgents in Helmand province today.
The initial target of the operation was a senior Taliban commander responsible for facilitating the deployment of improvised explosive devices in the Nad 'Ali District and having overall command of nearly 70 enemy fighters within the insurgent network.
Upon arrival at the insurgent compound, Afghan and coalition forces called-out the suspected insurgents. The force was engaged immediately by an armed insurgent who was subsequently killed. After the engagement, Afghan and coalition forces continued the call-out, and several men, women and children safely exited the compound.
Afghan and coalition forces searched the compound and detained 11 individuals suspected of having links to local insurgent IED networks targeting Afghan and coalition forces.
