KABUL- An Afghan and coalition security force conducted a multi-day deliberate clearing operation aimed at disrupting the Taliban's freedom of movement in Zharay District.
The operation began Wednesday and ended Friday.
The security force continued their effort to disrupt enemy safe havens in Kandahar province, this time targeting an area around the village of Ghariban, an area plagued with improvised explosive device activity and populated with insurgents.
Intelligence reports allowed the security force to focus on several compounds in the area, which is known as an enemy staging area for attacks into Kandahar City.
The insurgents engaged the security force on several occasions throughout the operation using small-arms, a recoilless rifle, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars. Coalition aircraft and the ground force suppressed multiple enemy positions and coalition forces conducted precision air strikes on multiple enemy fighting positions, destroying them.
The Taliban uses intimidation and threats to force their way into areas outside Kandahar City to stage their attacks. Afghan and coalition forces are focusing on clearing known safe havens in Zharay and neighboring Panjwa'i District and denying the insurgents use of these areas.
The security force protected the women and children throughout the operation.
