KABUL - An Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents in Helmand overnight while in pursuit of a Taliban military commission member and Nawah elder who participates in small arms fire and improvised explosive device attacks.

Afghan and coalition forces have been degrading the Taliban military commission operating in Nawah-ye Barakzai District over the last several months. Last month, a security force captured the Nawah deputy district commander, who was also a member of the commission.

Intelligence tips led the security force to target a compound north of the village of Zarrin Khan Baba Ziarat in Nawah-ye Barakzai District to search for the targeted individual. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully and then secured the area.

After initial questioning of the residents on scene, the security force detained the suspected insurgents. The security force also found wet opium at the scene, which is often trafficked to fund insurgent activity.

The security force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
