KABUL, Afghanistan - Acting on intelligence reports and tips from local citizens, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted a joint operation which led to the detention of 18 suspected insurgents in Helmand province Sept. 12.
The targeted compound is linked to a key Taliban commander with expertise in rocket and mortar use and who has conducted numerous indirect fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
The commander is associated with senior Taliban commanders in the area and is alleged to be the critical weapons and explosives supply link between local Taliban in Helmand province and their weapons and explosives suppliers in Pakistan.
After the combined force secured the compound, they made several successive call-outs to allow numerous men, women and children to peacefully exit. The 18 suspected insurgents were detained without incident.
The security force protected the women and children during the entire operation.
Ten kilograms of wet opium was also found during the search and destroyed in place.
