KABUL – An Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban district shura member and two of his associates in Paktika province Sunday during continued efforts to reduce the insurgent threat prior to this week’s elections.
The suspect was planning to disrupt the elections and he actively participates in Taliban propaganda campaigns.
“Afghan and coalition forces are focused on hindering insurgent plans to disrupt the upcoming parliamentary elections. The security force killed a Taliban facilitator Friday and a Taliban commander Saturday as they prepared to attack the elections,” U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director.
Intelligence tips led the security force to target a compound in the village of Put Kheyl in Sharan district to search for the targeted individual. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully and then secured the area.
After initial questioning of the residents on scene, the security force identified and detained the shura member and two of his associates.
The security force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
