KABUL – Afghan and coalition security forces detained several insurgents in Logar Tuesday, including a Taliban sub-commander responsible for attacks in Baraki Barak, Charkh and Pul-e Alam districts.

The commander also maintained close ties with facilitators and commanders conducting attacks in Kabul.

Based on intelligence tips, the combined security force targeted a compound in the village of Chalowza‟i in Baraki Barak district to search for the commander. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully and then the combined force cleared the compound.

During the search, the security force found the commander hiding in a floor oven in the compound.

“This is the second time in recent weeks a Taliban commander has been found hiding in an oven,” said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “Whether they hide in a cave or an oven, we‟re going to find the enemies of Afghanistan and secure peace for this country.”

After the area was secure and the security force conducted initial questioning on scene, they detained the commander and three of his associates. The security force also discovered documents referencing Taliban members at the scene.

The assault force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
