KABUL – Afghan and coalition security forces detained three insurgents in Paktika province Wednesday, including a Taliban sub-commander and a Taliban facilitator active within the province.
The commander leads an improvised explosive device attack network, and supplies munitions and IED material to his associates. The facilitator conducted surveillance in preparation for Taliban operations and reported information to several active Taliban cells, which threaten the security of the local population.
Intelligence tips led the security force to a compound west of the village of Mochwats in Sharan district to search for the commander. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully and then the combined security force cleared and secured the compound.
The security force identified and detained the commander, along with the facilitator and one of their associates after initial questioning of the residents at the scene. After conducting an on-scene exchange of information with a nearby Afghan Uniformed Police patrol, the security force departed without incident.
The security force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
