KABUL - Multiple intelligence sources and tips from local citizens led a joint Afghan National Security and coalition force patrol to the location of a known improvised explosive device facilitator near Kakarak, Uruzgan province Thursday.
Afghan and coalition forces secured the suspected insurgent compound peacefully and detained several suspected insurgents. Forces found IED initiators and more than 40 kilograms of explosives.
Though the targeted facilitator was not at the location, indicators led the Afghan and coalition force to conclude the suspected insurgent was nearby.
The force moved to the suspected-insurgent location and secured the compound. They detained suspected insurgent and received information of a cache site nearby.
After moving to the cache site they found small-arm weapons and additional IED making materials, including 26 anti-personnel mines, numerous pressure-plate initiators, plastic explosives, numbers rocket-propelled grenades, artillery shells, grenades and blasting caps.
Upon leaving the cache site, the force received small-arms fire from two insurgents a few hundred meters away. They returned fire and the insurgents withdrew. The forces left the area without further incident.
All weapons and explosives were destroyed in place.
