KABUL - An Afghan and coalition security force killed several insurgents, including Sayed Karim, a Taliban sub-commander operating in Khugyani District in Nangarhar province, Saturday.

Karim planned attacks against Afghan civilians and Afghan and coalition forces, and led at least 15 insurgent fighters.

Intelligence led the security force to target a compound in Landay in Khugyani District to search for the commander. As the security force moved toward the targeted compound, insurgents immediately began firing from both the primary compound and an adjacent compound.

Multiple insurgents then ran from the primary compound, continually engaging the security force with small arms fire from an open field and from a nearby tree line. The assault force returned fire killing two insurgents in the open field. As the fire fight continued, coalition forces conducted an air strike on the tree line, killing one other insurgent. They found multiple weapons and ammunition vests with the insurgents.

Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully and then the combined force started clearing the compound.

During the clearance, the security force encountered armed insurgents barricading themselves in one of the buildings. The security force engaged, killing four insurgents, one in the primary compound, and three others in two adjacent compounds. One of these insurgents was a rooftop sentry who engaged the force as they approached the primary compound.

When the area was secure, the assault force questioned all the people at the scene and detained one insurgent. The security force protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
Initial reporting indicates no civilians were killed or injured during this operation.
