KABUL – An Afghan and coalition security force detained two Taliban insurgents and killed five in Kunduz province Sunday while in pursuit of a Taliban sub-commander operating in Aliabad district.

The commander plans and conducts attacks against Afghan civilians and Afghan and coalition forces.

Based on intelligence reports, the security force targeted a compound in the village of Lala Maydan in Aliabad district to search for the commander. As the security force approached, several armed insurgents ran from the targeted building firing at the security force. The assault force reacted by engaging the insurgents from the ground and from coalition aircraft. Five insurgents were killed in the engagement. The terrain prevented a thorough inspection of the engagement areas to determine the type of weapons used by the insurgents.

After the area was secure, the Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully and then the combined force cleared the compound. After questioning the residents at the scene, the security force detained two insurgents.

The assault force protected the women and children throughout the search.
