KABUL – U.K. forces today transferred responsibility for security in Sangin District to U.S. forces. This tactical realignment and rebalancing of International Security Assistance Forces in Helmand province has been possible due to the increase in U.S. Marines and will allow U.K. forces to be reinvested throughout central Helmand.

In recent months the Afghan National Security Forces in Sangin have been working alongside U.K. and U.S. forces in the district, increasing security and allowing the influence of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to grow. U.K. forces arrived in Sangin in 2006 and since then have partnered with ANSF to provide security allowing governance and economic development to take root; U.S. forces will take forward these achievements.

“The attitude, service, and sacrifice that has been paid by the Royal Marines has been exemplary and has set a very good example for the people of Sangin,” said Sangin District Governor Mohammad Sharif. “As 40 Commando goes, they will be missed by the people of Sangin and they will be in our thoughts and minds forever as we will always remember their hard work and efforts.”

U.S. Marine Maj. Gen. Richard P. Mills, commander Regional Command Southwest, praised the U.K. forces saying, “U.K. forces have carved out a solid security bubble that we are moving U.S. forces into. They are leaving strong professional relationships with the people and the ANSF in Sangin. We will continue to build on the successes and continue to work with the local population and forces there.”
