KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force captured the Taliban district commander for Baghlan-e Jadid district and killed two Taliban insurgents – including Mullah Mahboob Elahi, a senior Taliban leader and weapons facilitator in Baghlan province, Monday.

The security force also captured three other insurgents during the operation. The district commander was linked to several attacks during Saturday’s elections, while Mullah Mahboob Elahi regularly travelled to Pakistan to meet with Taliban senior leadership and obtain weapons.

Based on intelligence reports, the security force targeted a compound in the village of Hemmat Khel in Baghlan-e Jadid district. As the security force approached the targeted compound, several armed insurgents ran from the targeted compound and threatened the security force. The assault force engaged the insurgents, killing two – including Mullah Mahboob Elahi. Additionally, one woman, who was part of the group of insurgents, was killed in the engagement.

Following the engagement, Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully and then the combined force cleared the compound.

After questioning the residents at the scene, the security force detained the district commander and three of his associates. The security force also discovered and destroyed multiple automatic weapons, grenades, magazines, mortar fuses and ammunition, along with improvised explosive device material – including multiple blasting caps at the scene.
