KABUL, Afghanistan – An unknown number of insurgents destroyed a critical cell phone tower in Chorah District, Uruzgan province yesterday evening. This unprovoked act of violence destroyed the Chorah cell tower eliminating all local cell phone service.

Insurgents have been directly targeting Afghan civilians’ access to communication systems as a way to intimidate the populace. The government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has been working to expand the cell phone network system through development projects in remote areas. They see cell phones as a way to connect Kabul with remote communities.

“Acts such as these continue to show the difference between insurgents and the legitimate government of Afghanistan,” said ISAF spokesman Brigadier General Josef Blotz. “The tower and the cell phone service provided was a threat to no one. We condemn these acts and the ideology of hate and intolerance they represent.”
