KABUL, Afghanistan – The International Security Assistance Force confirmed an Afghan and coalition security force killed Abdul Ahad, a suicide IED attack-planner in central Helmand, Tuesday.
In addition to planning attacks, Ahad was also responsible for commanding a local Taliban cell, in which he dispatched and coordinated suicide attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
Acting on tips from Afghan civilians and intelligence received, the security force also detained several suspected insurgents during the operation.
As Afghan National Security and coalition forces were in the process of securing the suspected insurgent compound, when two armed insurgents were seen running away from the compound to a nearby wooded area. They were engaged and killed when they presented hostile intent.
Afghan National Security and coalition forces then used call-out procedures in successive attempts to peacefully detain the suspected insurgents. The force protected 16 women and 31 children during the operation.
