KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition security forces detained several suspected insurgents in Khost province Wednesday while in pursuit of a senior Haqqani facilitator responsible for procuring improvised explosive device material, including mines, remotes and blasting caps.
The facilitator operates throughout the Paktika, Paktiya and Khost region.
Coalition forces conducted a precision air strike targeting the facilitator in a remote area south of Kamal Kheyl in Shamul district Wednesday. A follow-on ground force went to the engagement site to assess the results of the strike as well as search a series of area compounds in pursuit of the facilitator.
Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit each building peacefully and then the joint security force cleared and secured the compounds. Initial questioning indicated the facilitator was wounded in the strike and was taken from the target area. The security force then detained several suspected insurgents for further questioning.
The security force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children for the duration of the search of the compounds.
