KABUL, Afghanistan – Two insurgent-planted improvised explosive devices injured at least 15 Afghan civilians in Jalalabad last night.
Insurgents have been directly targeting Afghan civilians and putting IEDs in places where Afghans travel, work and gather in large numbers, said Rear Admiral Greg Smith Director of Communication, International Security Assistance Force. This most recent attack which resulted in civilian causalities and property damage occurred near the district prosecutor’s office in the Nangahar Provincial capital.
“We condemn this callous attack against the Afghan people,” said Admiral Smith. “It is another demonstration of insurgents’ contempt for innocent civilians.
“Our sympathies are with the families and friends of those harmed by this attack. ISAF stands shoulder to shoulder with our Afghan partners, and together we will continue to drive the insurgents out of areas where they can hurt the Afghan people.”
Insurgents commonly employ tactics that result in indiscriminate violence as evidenced by their frequent use of IEDs, said Admiral Smith. From the beginning of 2010 through mid-September, insurgent IEDs have killed and wounded approximately 1500 innocent civilians.
