IRAQ - “I don’t drink near beer… because I get in fake fights,” joked comedian Scott Kennedy during his Sept. 7 performance, in front of more than 200 service members and civilians at Contingency Operating Base Adder, Iraq.

Kennedy’s “Comics Ready to Entertain” performance at Memorial Hall marked his 39th tour to Iraq, and he has toured Afghanistan 11 times. A Lubbock, Texas, native, he has appeared on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” CBS’s “The Late Late Show,” Norwegian Cruise Lines shows, and on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

He also performs to sold-out crowds up to five times a year at Harrah’s Las Vegas Hotel. Kennedy’s two guests included comedians Nathan Timmel, an Iowa native, and Tom Foss, a West Virginia native.

Timmel has performed at comedy clubs across the U.S., recorded several comedy CDs that receive regular airplay on Sirius and XM satellite radio, and visited the nationally syndicated “Bob and Tom Show” twice. He has performed for American soldiers stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Japan, and many other countries.

Foss’ physical, thought-provoking comedy is often compared to George Carlin and Robin Williams: “I passed a picnic area. No facilities. How many times have you been driving down the road thinking to yourself… man, have I got to take a picnic,” Foss joked.

The three “Comics Ready to Entertain” performances gave service members an opportunity to relax and unwind from their daily work routines in theater.

“It was good to come out and laugh and get my mind off of work,” said Spc. Lance Lowe, a paralegal specialist with the 224th Sustainment Brigade, 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), and a Fresno, Calif., native. “It was a good change of pace.”

Service members appreciated the comedians travelling all the way to the Middle East to perform for them.

“It was nice to see people come out from their normal day to risk being out here [Iraq] to make us laugh,” said Spc. Kristyne Thomas, a paralegal specialist with the 224th Sust. Bde., and a Modesto, Calif., native. She added that it was “cool” that Kennedy admires all service members, regardless of their age or rank.

“I thought it was great that soldiers and airmen liked it,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Lowell White, command sergeant major of the 224th Special Troops Battalion, 224th Sust. Bde., and a Wilmington, Calif., native. “It made me laugh. You could see the pure enjoyment that the soldiers got out of it. This has been one of the better turnouts. Every one of these comedians connected with the soldiers.”
