    224th Sustainment Brigade

IRAQ - Two soldiers with the 632nd Maintenance Company, 110th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 224th Sustainment Brigade, 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), execute a wide array of administrative functions, allowing for smooth operations at Contingency Operating Base Adder, Iraq.

The company’s Soldiers perform missions that range from simple vehicle services to parts fabrication, weapons modification, or power pack changes in machines. The soldiers usually work long hours in the heat and are always dirty.

Sgt. Norma Ortiz, the orderly room non-commissioned officer-in-charge with the 632nd Maint. Co., and a Falls Church, Va., native, along with Spc. Karissa Fussel, an orderly room clerk with the 632nd Maint. Co., and a Garner, Maine, native, tackle the daily task of performing all the administrative functions for the unit.

While their job usually goes unnoticed by the other soldiers, the work that they perform allows the rest of the unit to benefit from promotions, awards, and leave, among other administrative functions.

“I think this is a really rewarding job because we get to help others out,” said Oritz. “Sometimes it’s hard to please everybody, but we try our best to do what we can for them.”

Ortiz also coordinates opportunities that boost morale for the troops, such as fundraisers, organizational days, and other social events.

Ortiz’s clerk, Fussel, is not only her friend, but also an important worker when it comes to the many tasks they are given.

“This isn't my MOS [Military Occupational Specialty],” said Fussel. “I've had to cross-train to work in the orderly room. I feel as though I accomplish more by helping the Soldiers, especially on such a direct level. My NCO knows and loves her job, which makes it easy for me to learn and makes this job more enjoyable.”

One thing is for sure: The 632nd Maintenance Company would not have the capability to perform at the level they do without the hard work and dedication from their competent orderly room staff.
