KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan and coalition security force killed Farman, a Taliban senior leader who terrorized the local population by participating in attacks, kidnappings, interrogations and executions of Afghan civilians. He was killed along with two of his associates during an overnight operation in Paktiya province.

Intelligence information led the security force to a compound in the village of Dinar Kheyl in Gardez District. As the combined security force approached the area, several armed insurgents ran from the targeted compound into a nearby orchard. The security force pursued them and immediately took enemy fire. The security force returned fire, killing three insurgents. After the gunfire ceased, the security force inspected the area and found a machine gun, automatic weapon, rocket-propelled grenade launcher with multiple rounds and multiple
    magazines with the insurgents.

After the area was secure, Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the targeted compound peacefully. The joint security force then cleared and secured the compound. They discovered a rifle and Taliban propaganda in the compound.

After initial questioning of the residents at the scene, the security force detained eight suspected insurgents.

"Omar continues to attempt leading from the safe-haven in Pakistan, meanwhile we continue removing his subordinate Taliban leaders from the battlefield," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "It's becoming clear that the Taliban's idea of leading from another country isn't terribly effective."

The security force protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
