KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan and coalition forces killed Maulawi Gul Muhammad the deputy shadow governor for Ghormach District, and Mullah Wahed, a Taliban military leader who conducted attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, during two separate operations in Badghis province Saturday.

Both individuals hosted meetings with Taliban senior leadership active in the district.

"The security force conducted two very successful missions yesterday," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "The targeted individuals were both senior Taliban leaders operating in western Afghanistan and we no doubt significantly disrupted Taliban operations in Ghormach District."

During the first operation targeting Maulawi Gul Muhammad, intelligence sources tracked him traveling with another insurgent in Ghormach District. As coalition forces approached the armed individuals, they threatened the security force. The security force engaged and killed Maulawi Gul Muhammad and wounded the other insurgent.

During the second operation targeting Mullah Wahed, the security force tracked him to a remote area in Ghormach District. Mullah Wahed threatened the ground security force with a pistol before the assault force engaged and killed him. After the area was secure, the security force searched the area and positively identified Mullah Wahed and the weapon.
