KABUL, Afghanistan - Two Afghan civilians were accidentally killed by coalition forces after insurgents attacked an International Security Assistance Force's base near Baraki Barak District, Logar province, eastern Afghanistan, Oct. 3.
The incident occurred when coalition forces returned fire following an indirect fire attack by insurgents.
Following the engagement, ISAF service members conducted a battlefield assessment when they found that two civilians had been accidentally killed during the attack.
"We deeply regret that our operation resulted in civilian loss of life and we express our sincerest condolences to the families," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director.
Coalition force leaders spoke with elders in the community following the discovery of the deceased Afghan civilians.
The incident is under investigation by the regional command.
