KABUL, Afghanistan - More than 3,000 kilograms of narcotics were seized when Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces conducted a series of vehicle stops in southern Afghanistan Friday.
Multiple intelligence reports and tips from local citizens led to the confiscation of 3,000 kilograms of dry opium, 75 kilograms of heroin, 50 kilograms of crystal heroin and 700 kilograms of ammonium nitrate in Helmand province.
In addition, six men were detained and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.
"By seizing this large truckload of narcotics, we have denied insurgents the means to buy weapons and explosives that put Afghan civilians, as well as Afghan and coalition forces at risk," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "We will continue to target insurgent drug operations throughout Afghanistan."
The drugs were destroyed on site.
