KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan and coalition forces detained several suspected insurgents in overnight operations in Kunduz and Khost provinces, targeting Haqqani and Taliban leaders Saturday.
In Khost province, Afghan and coalition forces continued tracking a Haqqani Network mid-level leader overnight, detaining two suspected insurgents without incident. The targeted individual coordinates and conducts attacks against Afghan National Army and coalition forces.
Intelligence information led the security force to a compound in the village of Lewan Kheyl in Sabari District to search for the targeted individual. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully, and then the joint security force cleared and secured the compound.
After initial questioning at the scene, the security force detained two suspected insurgents. The security force also discovered and destroyed multiple weapons, a blasting cap, explosives and military uniforms at the scene.
In northern Kunduz province, a separate security force detained three suspected insurgents while targeting a Taliban mid-level leader for the Gor Tapa area. He leads attacks in Kunduz City using foreign fighters, and is associated with Taliban and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leaders in the area.
After the Afghan-led call out, the joint security force cleared and secured the compound. After initial questioning of the residents at the scene, the security force detained the suspected insurgents.
The security force did not fire their weapons during either operation and they protected the women and children for the duration of the searches.
