FORT HOOD, Texas— It was a morning filled with savory smells of eggs, bacon, sausage and potatoes; all folded into a soft, warm tortilla shell.
Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, alongside staff members from the William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home, in Temple, Texas, prepared and served breakfast tacos at the home, and delivered tacos to the local community as part of a fundraiser, Oct. 12.
The event was the 14th fundraiser the veterans home completed this year for the Alzheimer’s Association—Texas Chapter, said Carolyn Rumfield, the activity director for the WRC Veterans Home.
In addition to selling tacos, the home sold raffle tickets for goodie baskets, a handmade quilt and gift certificates, said Rumfield.
In addition to raising awareness for Alzheimer’s, a degenerative brain disorder causing memory loss that affects more than 5 million Americans, the fundraiser allowed soldiers to give back to the veterans.
“It’s an honor, it’s a privilege for me, today, to serve them in just a menial task of making tacos,” said Pfc. Robin Williams Jr., an intelligence analyst who participated in the fundraiser.
Williams said he has great respect for those that served before him and knows the importance helping support Alzheimer’s research.
“Our mind is everything … to have our knowledge taken away from us [by Alzheimer’s disease], that’s it, that’s everything,” said Williams.
Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t just take our knowledge but our past as well.
“One of the things we value from our veterans is their experience and knowledge, so what were really losing is history,” said Capt. Michael Goddard, HHC commander.
One thing that isn’t taken from the veteran’s memories is the troops and their appearance, said Rumfield.
“The (military) uniform is like medicine to the soul,” she said.
The fundraiser was a success and the veterans’ home morale was boosted because of the support of the troops, explained Rumfield.
Overall goals for the fundraiser were met with nearly 600 tacos being sold and all proceeds going to the Alzheimer’s Association, she said.
The raffle drawings will take place Nov. 28. Winners not present the day of the drawing will be notified by phone, she said.
The next event scheduled for the veterans’ home is an Alzheimer’s Memory Walk Nov. 6 starting at 0800, at the veterans’ home in Temple.
