KABUL, Afghanistan - A school bus carrying female students hit an insurgent-planted improvised explosive device, killing nine and wounding 10, in the Khash Rod district of Nimroz province Wednesday, according to initial reports.

Eight of the nine killed were children. An International Security Assistance Force helicopter medically evacuated three Afghan civilians to a coalition hospital for treatment.

"This is a horrific tragedy and demonstrates the indiscriminate killing of civilians from IEDs planted by insurgents. ISAF condemns this violence in the strongest possible terms," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "Our thoughts and concerns are with the families of this senseless crime."
