KAJAKI, Afghanistan - Seasonal change brings with it a shift in weather as well as climate. For the Afghans living around the Kajaki Dam, every opportunity to prepare for the winter months ahead is essential for their continued success and survival.
To help the citizens of Kajaki prepare for the brutal climate change, local Afghan National Police worked together in handing out 64 bags of alfalfa seed to more than 50 Afghan villagers in Kajaki, Oct. 25, with more seed to be delivered as the week progresses.
“The seed distribution is part of a program designed to identify and support the local’s needs, aiding them in making ends meet over the winter,” said Maj. Ethan Harding, civil affairs detachment officer in charge, attached to Regimental Combat Team 2.
“During the distribution, the ANP handed out approximately 64 bags of seed,” said Capt. Thomas Kearns, executive officer of India Battery, 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines.
In order to help produce feed for their livestock, the villagers will use the alfalfa seed to grow forage for their flocks.
The forage produced by the alfalfa seed will help supplement the villager’s food supplies provided for their animals, allowing them enough feed to last throughout the upcoming winter months.
As the villagers came to receive their bag of seed, the ANP were there to help load the bags onto the wheelbarrows and backs of everyone who was there to take delivery of their portion of the seed distribution.
Lending a helpful-hand, the ANP did their part in providing both security and support to the local villagers of Kajaki, ensuring the wellbeing and safety of their fellow Afghans.
