KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force patrol arrested a wanted insurgent leader during an operation in Charikar District, Parwan province, Thursday.
The insurgent leader was arrested on a Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan warrant for allegedly directing two Hezb-E Islami Gulbunnin, or HIG, cells of approximately 40 fighters who routinely conduct attacks against ANSF and ISAF in the local area. He is also responsible for the planning, coordination and execution of indirect fire attack on Bagram Air Base.
In order to finance insurgent activities, he and his associates also conduct criminal activities throughout the local area ranging from robbery to the extortion of local Afghan citizens.
Multiple intelligence sources and tips from local citizens led the joint security force to a building thought to house the targeted HIG leader. The joint security force knocked on the door and asked for the insurgent by name. He confirmed his identity and was arrested without incident.
Several automatic weapons, associated ammunition, grenades and communication devices were found in a search of his residence.
ANSF took him into custody for processing and further questioning.
