KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghanistan’s Minister of Communication opened a new communications center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the Khinj district of Panjshayr province Nov. 2.

“The communications center will include phones, computers and a post office for locals to use,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Phillip Baker, Panjshayr Provincial Reconstruction Team senior engineer.

Panjshayr Gov. Keramuddin Karim; Amirzai Sangin, minister of communications and Information Technology; Khinj district Gov. Mohammad Tareq; and Panjshayr PRT Director Bill Martin spoke at the ceremony, which was attended by President Karzai’s Ministerial Adviser, Mohammad Jegdalek, various Afghan media, Afghan officials and local residents.

After Karim welcomed those in attendance, he acknowledged the efforts of the minister of communication.

“We are proud today that the minister of communication has come to Panjshayr and we hope other ministers are doing good work in other provinces as well,” said Karim.

“I saw many children in the road going to school all over Panjshayr and the surrounding provinces,” said Sangin. “This shows our young generation is looking to education and the future of the country is in their hands.”

Sangin said the development was attributed to the people of Panjshayr.

“I’m sure it’s not easy, but all this peace is made possible by the Panjshayri people because they are working with the government and the government can keep the peace,” Sangin said.

The equipment for the building will be provided by the Ministry of Communication, said Baker.

“Having a place to make phone calls and get on the internet will be new for the people in the local area. The project was made possible by the partnership and hard work of the local contractors, the Panjshayr communications director, the district governor and the PRT,” said Baker.

The ceremony concluded as local media recorded the Panjshayr governor cutting the ribbon to the entrance of the new center.
