KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces detained an important leader in the central Kandahar Taliban network and several terrorist suspects in the Panjwa’i District of Kandahar province Nov. 19.

The targeted individual is reported to be a threat to local citizens as well as Afghan and coalition forces.

Intelligence reports indicate he is responsible for numerous terrorist activities including kidnapping and beating local Afghans. Additionally, he is responsible for criminal acts against Afghans such as burning a tractor containing wheat and fertilizer near a school.

Security forces detained the individuals as they targeted the Taliban leader who is also an improvised explosive device facilitator. He is known to travel between Chaman, Pakistan, and Kandahar City to coordinate the movement of weapons, IED components and terrorist personnel throughout Kandahar.

Security forces searched several compounds during the joint security operation. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all the occupants to exit the buildings peacefully. The joint team detained the suspects after conducting initial questioning on the scene.

The security forces conducted the operation without firing their weapons. No women or children were injured or detained during the operation.
