KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces killed two insurgents and detained several suspected insurgents as they targeted a key Taliban leader in the Bakwah District of Farah province yesterday.

The targeted individual is the Bakwah District shadow governor and a key leader involved in foreign-fighter facilitation and networking. He maintains ties with other senior Taliban leaders and supplies weapons and training to foreign fighters.

In one of two operations throughout the course of the day, the security team followed two insurgents as they traveled in the shadow governor’s known area of operations. The individuals were shot and killed after displaying hostile intent while brandishing weapons as coalition forces brought the insurgents’ vehicle to a halt.

The joint security force detained several additional suspected insurgents at a targeted compound in a second operation later that night. The security team secured the targeted area in search of the Taliban leader.

Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting the search. The joint team detained the suspects based on initial questioning at the scene.

No women or children were injured or detained during this operation.
