KABUL, Afghanistan – Soldiers from the 8th Commando Kandak and U.S. special forces killed the Taliban leader directly responsible for the deaths of seven Afghan National Police members earlier this month in Khas Uruzgan, yesterday.
The Taliban leader led the force that overran a Khaz Uruzgan checkpoint Nov. 9, killing seven police members and wounding one during the attack. Five AK-47s, one rocket propelled grenade launcher, one PKM machine gun, and two handheld radios were taken from the checkpoint during the raid.
The combined Afghan-coalition force conducted a series of missions following the attack on the checkpoint in order to confirm the location of the individual responsible for the killing of the national police members.
While conducting a search of a village in Khas Uruzgan, the Afghan-led force positively identified the Taliban leader. As he attempted to flee the area, a coalition forces helicopter flying in support of the mission followed him, tracking his movement and containing his progress. The Taliban leader eventually engaged the helicopter with small arms fire, and was killed when the aircraft returned fire.
No civilians were injured and no property damage was reported during the operation.
