KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security Forces and International Security Assistance Forces conducted an operation to detain a Taliban leader in the Baraki Barak District of Logar province yesterday.
The Taliban leader is known to have planned, coordinated and executed direct fire and improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
Multiple intelligence sources led the joint security force to the suspected location of the Taliban leader. The occupants allowed the Afghan security forces to enter peacefully.
The targeted leader was not at the location, but after questioning the occupants, one male was detained after he tested positive for explosive residue.
As the joint security force began to leave the compound, they were alerted to an ambush being set up by insurgents. The joint security force conducted a counter-ambush operation and a fire fight ensued. The insurgents immediately retreated as the joint security force advanced on their positions.
Three insurgents were wounded in the engagement and taken to a local medical facility for treatment, where one insurgent died of his wounds.
The joint security force searched the ambush position and found numerous automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades left by the insurgents.
The weapons were confiscated by Afghan authorities.
