KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces detained a key improvised explosive device facilitator and two suspected insurgents during a joint security operation in Kandahar province yesterday.
The forces captured the Taliban IED facilitator in the Kandahar District. He is known to illegally import components and fertilizers from an IED facilitation network in Chaman, Pakistan.
The now-detained individual distributed the components to homemade-explosive producers in Kandahar City. The insurgent maintains ties with senior Taliban members in surrounding areas including Zabul province and Spin Boldak, Kandahar.
The joint security force used intelligence reports to lead them to the targeted location.
Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call all occupants to exit the targeted buildings peacefully before conducting the search. The Afghan and coalition forces detained the terrorist leader after he identified himself as the targeted individual in the operation. The forces detained the additional suspects based on initial questioning at the scene.
The joint security team conducted the operation in the hours of darkness to minimize the risk to local citizens. No women or children were injured or detained during this operation.
The security forces conducted the operation without firing their weapons.
