KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces detained more than 10 suspected insurgents during three operations in Afghanistan yesterday.
Afghan and coalition security forces detained several suspected insurgents during their search for a high-ranking Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan senior leader in Kunduz province.
The targeted individual facilitates suicide bombers from Pakistan for attacks in the province and acts as a liaison for Taliban in the area.
Intelligence reports led the security force to a series of compounds north of Gor Tappah in Chahar Darah District to search for the IMU operative. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compounds peacefully before the joint security force cleared and secured the buildings. After initial questioning, the security force detained the suspected insurgents.
A separate security force detained numerous suspected insurgents during a search for a Haqqani Network senior leader responsible for the facilitation of improvised explosive device material, weapons and ammunition in Khost province.
During the search, the security force discovered IED instruction manuals hidden among Qurans.
The security force followed intelligence tips to a compound north of Tarji in Tanai District to search for the senior leader. After an Afghan-led call out the joint security force cleared the buildings, and in addition to the IED manuals, discovered multiple automatic weapons, military uniforms and a significant amount of ammunition. After initial questioning, the security force detained the suspected insurgents.
Meanwhile in southern Afghanistan, Afghan and coalition forces detained a suspected insurgent during a joint security operation in Zabul province. The forces were targeting a Taliban IED cell leader whose operations extend from the Shah Joy District of the province and into the Gelan District in Ghazni province.
The targeted individual is reportedly an expert in the construction and emplacement of IEDs. His activities include procuring sensitive components for use in IED attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
The joint security teams conducted the operations in the hours of darkness to minimize the risk to local citizens. No women or children were injured or detained during these operations.
The security forces conducted the operations without firing their weapons.
