KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces captured a Haqqani facilitator who is believe to be linked to yesterday’s suicide attack against Forward Operating Base Lightning during an operation in Paktiya province yesterday.
A suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest near the entry control point of FOB Lightning yesterday, killing two International Security Assistance Force servicemembers. Several more were wounded in the attack.
“We will not let these terrorist attacks go without reprisal,” said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “We will continue to track down and capture those responsible for this attack and those like them.”
The Haqqani facilitator was sent to Afghanistan by senior Haqqani leadership to boost confidence and morale of Haqqani fighters. He also acted as an intermediary for suicide bombers.
Based on intelligence tips, the security force targeted a compound outside Gardez City. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully before the joint security force cleared and secured the buildings.
Initial questioning at the scene helped identify the facilitator, who was detained along with two of his associates. The security force also found an automatic weapon.
The assault force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
