KABUL, Afghanistan – Two Afghan civilians were wounded in an insurgent attack conducted against an International Security Assistance Force forward operating base in Darah-ye Pech District, Kunar province today.
Afghan army and ISAF returned fire, dispersing the insurgents and then assisted the wounded who were evacuated to an ISAF medical treatment facility.
In southern Afghanistan, during combined clearing operations in Kandahar, Zabul and Helmand provinces, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF found four weapons caches today. The caches consisted of one 155 mm artillery shell, one 105 mm shell, four rocket-propelled grenades, four hand grenades, four AK-47s, one chest rack, three full AK-47 magazines, 30 .50 caliber rounds, 900 7.62 mm rounds, 100 5.56 mm rounds, four blasting caps, one gun and one motorcycle.
The weapons from all provinces were taken into possession and will be destroyed.
One insurgent was killed and more than 20 detained during an Afghan National Army and ISAF patrol in Helmand province yesterday.
Combined forces were engaged with small arms fire by insurgents in Nad’Ali District and after gaining positive identification direction, returned fire and called for air support. The aircraft on the scene supported the ground forces who were then able to search a nearby compound, detaining the insurgents and discovering an improvised explosive device components cache. In the same area, during a separate clearing operation, combined forces were engaged by insurgents and supported by an air weapons team, returned fire. The incident resulted in two insurgents killed and one wounded.
Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured in these operations.
