    KABUL, Afghanistan – Three Afghan children were seriously injured by insurgents during an attack against an International Security Assistance Force base in eastern Afghanistan.

    Also, Afghan National Security and ISAF forces discovered weapon and improvised explosive device component caches as well as killed several insurgents in the east and south, Dec. 16.

    During an insurgent attack on an ISAF base, three Afghan civilians were wounded in Khas Kunar district, Kunar province, Dec. 15. Coalition forces immediately provided medical assistance and evacuated the wounded to an ISAF medical treatment facility.

    In Sangin district, Helmand province, an Afghan Army and ISAF patrol was engaged with small arms fire by insurgents. Coalition forces returned fire and called for artillery and air support. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces conducted combined artillery and air weapons fire on the insurgent position, killing several insurgents. Ground forces went towards the insurgents’ position and discovered an IED components cache.

    In Paktiya province, an Afghan National Police patrol discovered a weapons cache in Sayyid Karam district consisting of 39 82 mm mortar rounds and seven anti-personnel mines. In the same province an Afghan National Security and ISAF patrol discovered a weapons cache while conducting a clearing operation in Jaji district. The cache consisted of three mortar rounds and possible homemade explosives. Combined forces also detained several suspected insurgents related to the weapons cache.

    In Helmand province, Afghan Army and ISAF patrols found two large weapons caches in Garm Ser and Marjeh districts during separate clearing operations. The caches consisted of 16 Russian grenades, 67 82 mm mortar rounds, one Chinese mortar round, 15 recoilless rifle rounds, three 60 mm mortar rounds, four hand grenades, 1,000 7.62 mm rounds and seven full AK-47 magazines.
    Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons from all provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
