KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces captured a Taliban leader for Khugyani District and killed two armed individuals during an operation in Behsud District of Nangarhar province Dec. 17.
The targeted individual led Taliban attacks on district centers, Afghan national security forces check points and coalition force bases. He also led a joint Taliban and Lashkar-e Islam group to assassinate or kidnap the Shinwari Rhimdad Khel sub-tribe leader in Achin District in the province.
Intelligence reports led the security force to a compound in Behsud District to search for the leader. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully before the joint force cleared and secured the buildings.
As the security force cleared and secured the buildings, they encountered two armed individuals who threatened the security force. The security force shot and killed the two armed men.
The security force continued clearing the targeted compound and detained the targeted individual along with another suspected insurgent after initial questioning on the scene. The force recovered a pistol, AK-47 and a rifle on the objective.
The assault force protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
