    KABUL, Afghanistan – Several insurgents were killed by Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces in separate clearing operations in southern Afghanistan over the last 24 hours.

    An Afghan Army and ISAF patrol spotted some insurgents emplacing an improvised explosive device in Sangin district, Helmand province, Dec. 22. After gaining positive identification, combined forces engaged the enemy position, killing two insurgents.

    An ISAF outpost was engaged by insurgents in Kajaki district, Helmand province, Dec. 21. After gaining positive identification of the enemy firing position, coalition forces returned mortar fire and called for air support. The air weapons team on scene engaged, killing one insurgent and dispersing the others.

    Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF also discovered several caches and killed one insurgent in southern Afghanistan, Dec. 22.

    In Kandahar and Helmand provinces, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF found three weapon and explosive caches in Zharay and Nah-e Saray districts. The caches consisting of seven full AK-47 magazines, 100 7.62 mm rounds, seven hand grenades, two blasting caps, 2.200 pounds (1000 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate, 10 improvised explosive devices, several IED electrical components and pressure plates, six 105 mortar rounds, one rocket-propelled grenade launcher, one Afghan National Army uniform and two RPG detonators.

    Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons and explosives from all provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
