CAMP LEATHERNECK, Helmand province, Afghanistan – A new Morale, Welfare and Recreation facility opened for service members on Camp Leatherneck with a ribbon cutting ceremony, Dec. 27.

The facility, which will be open 24-hours a day, seven days a week, is equipped with televisions, movies, video and board games, books, foosball and pool tables for service members to use.

“When you’re not working you ought to have a little time to relax, a little bit of time to take some of the stress off, and this gives us a great facility to do that,” said Maj. Gen. Richard Mills, commanding general of Regional Command Southwest.

Carlos Moring, lead foreman for DynCorp working on the MWR facility added, “The military works hard all day and needs a place to come and relax and enjoy.”

To complete this facility, multiple components were employed from both the military and civilian work force.

Cpl. Casey Flannigan, a combat engineer with I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group (Fwd), worked approximately 50 hours constructing tables, chairs and anything else made of wood to finish the MWR.

Flannigan from St. Paul, Minn., said that he is proud of his work, and that of his fellow Marines, to prepare the facility for the future service members who will make use of it.

“This place is going to be good for the Marines here, and for the units that are passing through here to be able to call home at the beginning or end of their deployment.”

Although it took many hours of work and many people to make this facility happen, the morale of the military personnel here is on the forefront of everyone’s thoughts.

“Were making it very comfortable for the service members to relax and for them to enjoy themselves,” said Moring.
