KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban leader in the Shin Wari area of Kunduz province, detaining numerous suspected insurgents and killing several armed insurgents during an operation yesterday.
The Taliban leader emplaces improvised explosive devices and distributes funds and weapons to Taliban leadership. He maintains ties with several senior Taliban leaders responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
Intelligence report led the security force to the targeted compound where Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound.
Several of the women informed the security force that there were three armed insurgents in the building. The security force attempted to call out the armed insurgents and they did not comply.
After several attempts, the security force escalated their call out procedures before entering the building resulting in three heavily armed insurgents being killed. The security force recovered machine guns, AK-47s, shotguns and chest racks.
The security force indentified three insurgents attempting to evade and followed them to a compound where the insurgents sought refuge. As the security force approached the compound, the three armed insurgents fired upon the force. The force returned fire, killing two of the armed insurgents. After the compound was secure numerous suspected insurgents were detained based on initial questioning at the scene and their involvement in insurgent activities.
The assault force protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
