KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force patrol targeted a Taliban leader during an operation in Nad ‘Ali District, Helmand province yesterday.
The Taliban leader is a prominent improvised explosive device expert and facilitator who also threatens and disciplines local Afghans who work with ISAF.
After Afghan forces performed a call-out to give the occupants of the target compound a chance to exit the area peacefully, they began clearing the buildings in the compound. During the search, one woman and five children were separated and protected.
As the patrol prepared to enter one of the buildings, a man attempted to engage the force with a handgun and was killed. Another man picked up the discarded handgun and ignored calls in Dari and Pashto to drop the weapon. He posed a threat to the patrol and was killed.
One man was detained during the operation and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.
