    KABUL, Afghanistan – One Afghan civilian and five others were seriously wounded, including one Afghan National Police service member, by an improvised explosive device triggered by insurgents in Herat city, Herat province Jan. 3.

    Several insurgents were killed by Afghan national security and International Security Assistance Forces during separate clearing operations in southern and eastern Afghanistan over the past 48 hours.

    In Kunar province, two ISAF patrols were engaged by insurgents with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades in Watahpur District, Jan. 1. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces returned fire and called for artillery fire and air support. Two nearby ISAF combat outposts directed artillery and mortar fire and close air support engaged the insurgents’ position. The coordinated coalition forces fire resulted in two insurgents killed.

    In the same province, after declaring an imminent threat against three insurgents moving into historical fighting positions in Darah-ye Pech District, coalition forces engaged the enemy location with effective .50 caliber fire killing two insurgents.

    Also today, ISAF patrols found several caches during separate clearing operations in eastern and southern Afghanistan.

    In Garm Ser District, Helmand province, during a dismounted patrol, Afghan and coalition forces discovered an AK-47 with a magazine, one M-16 magazine, 50 RPK rounds, one rocket propelled grenade launcher with four rounds, one Enfield 303 rifle, one cylinder with an unknown rocket inside, 100 60 mm mortar rounds, three sacks of artillery caps, 178 OB-9 recoilless rifle rounds, 3 Russian anti-personnel mines, 20 U.S. 7.62 links, 50 RPD rounds, 88 82 mm HE mortars, 178 OG-2 projectiles, 154 OG-15P mortars, one type-52 recoilless rifle round, one RPG-7, four PG-7 rounds, one RPD, 50 linked 7.62 x 39 mm RPD rounds.

    In Nahr-e Saraj District, Helmand province, ISAF soldiers found six RPG warheads and five unexploded ordinances.

    In Mohammad Agah District, Logar province, Musahi police found four BM12 rockets, seven anti-vehicle mines, one RPG, three boxes of Dashka bullets, two boxes of mortar fuses, three hand grenades, three boxes of fuse wire, one battery, three pylons and wood for preparing traps.

    In the same province, Afghan and coalition forces discovered nine Russian grenades while conducting an operation.

    In Maidan Shahr District, Wardak province, Afghan National Army soldiers found 27 land mines and 25 detonators.

    In Garm Ser District, Helmand province, ISAF members discovered eight 100 pound bags of ammonium nitrate and two rifles.

    All items were collected by explosive ordinance disposal personnel for exploitation and controlled detonation.
