KABUL, Afghanistan – Numerous insurgents were killed by International Security Assistance Forces during separate clearing and security operations in eastern and southern Afghanistan over the past 24 hours.
In Kunar province, an ISAF air weapons team declared an imminent threat when armed insurgents moved into a historical fighting position in Watahpur District. After gaining positive identification, the air weapons team engaged the enemy position, killing several insurgents.
During a separate clearing operation, coalition forces spotted numerous insurgents preparing an attack against an ISAF combat outpost in Sangin District, Helmand province. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces called for air support. The air weapons team on scene engaged the enemy position, killing two insurgents and wounding several others.
In Ghazni province, an ISAF patrol was engaged by numerous insurgents with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades in Muqer District. Coalition forces gained positive identification and requested air support. The air weapons team on scene confirmed positive identification and engaged the enemy position with intensive fire, killing two insurgents and dispersing the others.
Also in eastern and southern Afghanistan, Afghan National Security and ISAF patrols found several caches during separate clearing operations over the past 24 hours.
In Kandahar province, an Afghan National Police and ISAF patrol discovered a weapons cache in Kandahar District, consisting of six grenades, nine AK-47s, 40 full AK-47 magazines, one 9mm pistol, six full 9 mm magazines, eight rocket-propelled grenades, three radios and several loose 7.62 mm rounds. Combined forces also detained two suspected insurgents related to the cache.
During separate clearing operations, in Ghazni and Paktika provinces, ISAF patrols found two weapon caches in Waghaz and Yahya Khel Districts consisting of 18 82 mm mortar rounds, 15 mortar rounds, loose ammunition and eight blasting caps. Kabul City Police discovered a large weapons cache in Paghman District, Kabul province consisting of 23 82 mm rockets.
In a joint Afghan National Security and ISAF vehicle interdiction operation, combined forces discovered a drugs and weapons cache in Helmand province. The cache consisting of two rifles, five artillery shells, two grenades, 176 pounds (80 kilograms) of hashish, 26 pounds (12 kg) of heroin and 44 pounds (20 kg) of opium. Combined forces also detained two suspected insurgents related to the cache. One of the two detainees is suspected to be a narcotics smuggler as well as accused of building improvised explosive devices and ordering a suicide bomb attack in Gereshk.
In Ghazni province, an Afghan National Security and ISAF patrol secured an improvised explosive device cache in Giro District.
Intelligence reports and tips from local citizens led the joint security force to discover six complete IEDs and an IED making chemicals cache consisting of 220 pounds (100 kg) of aluminum powder and 132 pounds (60 kg) of ammonium nitrate.
Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons, drugs and explosives from all provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
