KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban leader along with four suspected insurgents during a security operation in Panjwa’i District of Kandahar province yesterday.
The Taliban leader is responsible for supplying insurgents in his group with weapons, emplacement of improvised explosive devices and attacks against checkpoints and civilian targets in the district. He maintains direct contact with other Taliban leaders in the area. Recent reporting indicates he planned to attack a school and checkpoint in Singzai village of Spin Boldak District.
Security forces followed leads to a targeted location in Panjwa’i District, where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit out of the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The security team detained the targeted Taliban leader based on initial questioning at the scene along with four suspected insurgents.
The security forces conducted the operation without firing their weapons.
No women or children were injured or detained during this operation.
