KABUL, Afghanistan – Several insurgents were killed and wounded by International Security Assistance Forces in southern Afghanistan, Jan. 9.
In Sangin District, Helmand province, during a base security operation, ISAF members received small arms fire from insurgents. The members returned fire, killing and wounding several insurgents.
In Marjeh District, Helmand province, during a dismounted patrol, ISAF members discovered 49 .50cal rounds and 47 25mm rounds.
Also in Garm Ser District, coalition forces found a weapons cache consisting of 160 Russian pistol rounds, 2000 AK-47 rounds, 200 AK-74 rounds, 60 British 5.56 rounds, 244 7.62 mm RKM rounds, 9 sets of cleaning gear, two ammo bags, 50 feet of orange detonation cord, five quarter-pound bags of military propellant, a PG7 motor, 15 rolls of trip wire, 50 Russian time fuses, nine AK-47 magazines, 40 pounds of explosives, five pounds of PE4, 15 pounds of sentec explosives, 15 pounds of Russian TNT and five pounds of unknown bulk explosives.
In the same district, 1000 pounds of marijuana was found in an open field.
Reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons, IED making components and drugs from all provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
